Israel helps the Kosovo Refugees

Ilan Frydman's visit to Macadonia May 1999

Irsaeli youth leaders were a central part of the international effort to help the Kosovo Refugees.

All the Israeli youth movements worked together and sent volunteers to help in entertaining the refugee children, in refugee camps in Macadonia - having fled from the bloodshed in Kosovo.

The moslem refugees arrive in the camps, by the thousands, many not knowing what has happened to the rest of their family, husbands and fathers missing, children without parents - having left their homes and possessions, usually given five minutes to run before their houses were blown up.

Israel was specifically asked by the UN to help with educational projects, and to liven up the lives of the refugee children, as their families tried to cope with the human tradegies and look for countires willing to accept them.

Ilan Frydman representing Bnei Akiva, was part of the group sent in the second half of May.

The refugee camps are just over the border from Kosovo, and the refugees are housed in tents with the essentials provided by various contributing countries.

Communications between the Israeli youth leaders and the refugee children was in the international language of play and fun.

We hope and pray that the conflict wll end soon and that the refugees will be able to return home with a lasting good impression of Israel.
